Krewe des Fleurs in the Media: Fox 8 Morning Edition

The Krewe des Fleurs were on TV!

The Magical Moving Garden is in full bloom! And what better way to celebrate the announcement of our newest flower than to share it on live TV? Fox 8 Morning Edition graciously invited the Krewe des Fleurs to talk a little bit about their 2020 Flower and updates on their latest commemorative throws on January 15, 2020. The krewe was represented by founder Laura Dean-Shapiro, Alexandra Tolbert and Claire Holahan.

Keep an eye out for our famous throws: Seeds as Beads, Wooden Nickels and Passionflower Pins! Our members work hard to create beautiful recycled or upcycled throws every year, to lessen the impact of the Carnival environmental footprint.

Secret Garden Memories: Magical Moments from 2018

Question: What was your favorite event so far this year?

Answer: “The New Orleans Decadence Parade. We paraded through the French Quarter on September 2nd, which also happens to my birthday! …To see so much love and acceptance and see people building each other up… is wonderful! Being a new member, I didn’t have my own flower yet, but I got to wear a beautiful blue orchid from another Krewe member, which fit the blue and yellow theme of Decadence perfectly!” – Shannon, 1st yr Fleur

Answer: “The Krewe of Boo Parade! Halloween in New Orleans is unlike anywhere in the world, so being able to walk in the Halloween parade as part of such a creative and local team felt like a spooky dream come true! I enjoy getting to expand on the creative process with each of us transforming our normal “lovely” fleurs, into scary, creepy, and carnivorous Fleurs! However, as a Captain informed me, we are not dead flowers, we are very much alive!” – Ivana, 1st yr Fleur

Answer: “The Belles and Beaus Ball for the American Cancer Society. The theme of the ACS Ball this year was, “Where Hope Grows,” and us Fleurs were asked to come represent. It was astounding to me how many people were touched by our presence, and wanted to know more about our Krewe. Most importantly, I saw our brightly colored and lit costumes light up the faces of some of the cancer patients at the Ball; that is the ultimate feeling.” – Kelly, 3rd yr Fleur

Secret Garden Memories: Pride Parade, Heather Brutz

What event did you attend? Pride Parade

Where did you go for the event? The parade started on Elysian Fields and we marched down Decatur to the CBD.

When was the event? June 2017

What did you wear? My Iris costume with a green and purple stem.

What about the event inspired you? I love to raise awareness and open mindedness about subjects that I’m passionate about. I think it’s important to have love and it doesn’t matter the sexual orientation. The pride parade allows people to be who they are!

What was your favorite moment from the event? Getting to know my beautiful Fleurs better. It was a loving and happy crowd of locals and tourists who came out to celebrate equality with us.

Kicking off the Season – Fleurs in the Media

It’s Carnival Time, everyone!  We have been busy, busy, busy getting ready to dance in the streets with you this year!  As we get closer to parade time, let’s catch up on how our season got started.

We debuted our 2017 flowers at our inaugural Secret Garden Party on Saturday, January 14, and were delighted to spend some time with Doug MacCash from NOLA.com a few days before the event.  It was a great visit!

Doug then honored us by covering the Secret Garden Party as we strolled and strutted our stuff in the French Quarter.  Check out the resulting video here:

Thank you, Doug!!  And we’ll see y’all on the streets!
